As an Indian travelling to Bhutan, the best thing is you do not need a visa. Any local id works.
But that is one of the most banal things about going there. You land in one of the most beautiful airports in the world nestled in a valley surrounded by mountains with the pilots pulling off a stunning landing.
Consistently rated as one of the happiest countries in the world, it is a country which loves its monarchy (who to their credit have been bringing in some level of democratic processes in the country) and has the phallus as a national symbol. Why should it not be happy then? :)
The easiest way to get to the place would be to drive in from India but we avoided the drives and got a hired car and guide. The best thing we did in the trip possibly. The guide was extremely helpful, going out of the way to get me yak meat from his mom's kitchen!
There are dzongs a plenty (fortress monastery some of which also serve as administrative offices today), wall frescoes galore, stories of the Buddha, warm and hospitable people and locations where you can sit and just watch time fly by.
Do make it a point to trek to the Tiger's Nest. It is slightly strenuous (due to the time factor and not the difficulty in trekking per se) but it is well worth it.
P.S. What is cuter than furry, mountain pups? Cute kids holding furry mountain pups!
Getting there
Bhutan requires you to fly into Paro. That flight by itself is breathtaking. Taking a guide is the best way around since they arrange vehicles and guides (it is mandatory to have a guide in Bhutan). They will also book you the air tickets. It is notoriously difficult to get online air tickets on Druk Air!
Definitely stay at the Metta Resort at Paro and try the hot stone bath.
